The scale 1:10 machine has been operating at sea since 2006!
The
Wave Star scale 1:10 machine has been in operation in the sea since 2006. It
is grid connected and has been through 15 storms without any damage. The
scale 1:10 machine has an output of 5.5 kilowatt and generates
electrical power corresponding to the electrical power consumption of
two single-family houses.
How it works On
each side of the oblong machine hemisphere-shaped floats are partially
submerged in the water. When a wave rolls in the floats are lifted one
by one. The floats are each positioned at the base of their own
hydraulic cylinder. When a float is raised, a piston in the cylinder
presses oil into the machine’s common transmission system with a
pressure of up to 200 bars. The pressure drives a hydraulic motor which
produces the electricity.
One of the most important patents
behind the Wave Star machine is the unique storm protection. The
machine automatically raises the floats out of the water when the waves
reach a certain height.
Tried-and-tested technology The
machine is based on tried-and-tested technology, which ensures a more
steady operation and faster project start-up. The Wave Star machine is
fundamentally based entirely on tried-and-tested technology. It is fair
to say that its hydraulic system is somewhat innovative, but all
components are tried-and-tested. The critical parts of the Wave Star
machine are housed in the generator casing on the bridge. The
generator, computers and relays are located here under climatised
conditions, which protects them against damage from moisture and salt
spray.
See it on Google Earth Enter
"Helligsoe" in Google Earth and then look slightly south east to the
coast. There is a 150 m long bridge from the shore to the machine and
you can clearly see the 5,5 kW scale 1:10 machine at the tip of the
bridge.
